When you sweat it out with a group of friends, it really makes the workout feel less like work. It turns into a group hang and that’s exactly what a few friends and I did one Saturday afternoon at the Treston Health Club.
Conveniently located at Uptown BGC, the club was a short drive from Bonifacio High Street Central where we came from after our morning classes at the Beyond BHS Studio. We were met by Hannah, the Club Supervisor, who showed us around and left us at the first torture chamber. Just kidding. It was the TRX Studio where a special class was scheduled for our group. There to lead the class was Coach Ton, a resident coach and licensed TRX Instructor.
Since we’re quite familiar with the concept of TRX and the exercises involved, we survived the class with enough energy to move on to another workout.
But first:
We toured the two studios. One was specifically designed for TRX, Kickboxing and Taekwondo classes (with padded flooring and equipment installed). The other was made for dance and yoga classes.
We walked to the gym area and were introduced to Coach Joef, another resident coach who led us through an advanced training program. Not a huge fan of machines, I found myself surprisingly impressed by the equipment the place held. The usual line of treadmills was there along with a few others (I honestly don’t know what they’re called).
I did enjoy one that worked the abductor and adductor muscles in the legs (inner and outer thighs). Loved it because I find it hard to work the adductors (inner thighs) without the use of equipment. I also loved how there were free weights around. There were kettlebells, a good rack of dumbells and a barbell. I also spotted a couple of foam rollers which one of the girls absolutely loved.
Why are these good signs? Because we are currently at an age where machines are becoming a thing of the past. Sure, they still work, but current trends in health and fitness now skew towards workouts that require little to no equipment, a short amount of time and can easily be done pretty much anywhere. So, to see a gym facility with machines carrying these types of equipment means they are also moving towards that direction.
Although we weren’t required to use the Kettlebells, Bosu balls and were only asked to lift the lighter weights, I’d have to say that Coaches Joef and Ton did a great job monitoring us and guiding us through the exercises. One of the most important things I always look for in coaches is their knowledge, not just about exercise, but also on the human body. Form is the primary thing to consider especially when doing strengthening exercises. Your form defines both the effectivity and safety of your workouts and your coaches will play a huge part in making sure you maintain proper alignment and movement especially when you’re just starting out.
Tip: When looking to enroll at any facility, don’t just consider the place and equipment or the number of classes offered. Do a bit of research on the coaches/teachers/instructors who will be helping you meet your health and fitness goals. You can’t go wrong with ones who have really studied the programs they teach you or ask you to do.
Alright, enough of the tough stuff. Let’s move on to my favorite part of the experience—the Spa. Mary and Shirley chose to get a Foot Spa which, according to them, felt really good. Nic and I were offered their Signature Swedish Massage. They had three rooms: two private, individual rooms for massages and scrubs plus one for foot massages, manis and pedis. Unfortunately, since we were short of time and had to leave because we had other plans, we only took 30 minutes each. Just half an hour into the experience already felt amazing especially after our workouts. I’m sure the full hour would have been blissful. Danita, my therapist, gave me the best massage I’ve had in such a long time. Seriously. They were all very well trained, charming and pleasant and the best thing about it is that their spa is open to both members and non-members. Rates are reasonable considering the quality of service their team provides. A full Swedish Massage only costs Php750 for non-members. Members get a discounted rate of Php650. I promised Hannah I would be back for another massage soon.
THE VERDICT
We left absolutely zen’d out and satisfied by our experience. The Treston Health Club is a premium health facility that won’t leave a hole in your pocket. The warm and friendly team are all professionals—awesome at what they do. The place isn’t crowded if you’re worried about that. It literally brings all your fitness and wellness needs together under one roof. So will we be back? Absolutely.
