Whenever it’s THAT time of the month, it could mean trouble for many girls. First of all, many of us who are unfortunate enough, have to deal with paralyzing menstrual cramps. Second, there are suddenly restrictions in movement–like a parent watching over you on prom night.
No matter how they’re marketed to give you freedom to move without having to worry about stains, sanitary pads just don’t cut it-especially when I’m on my mat working on my hip mobility. I’ve tried so many pads in the past and none of them is capable of making sure all my bases are covered. This is why I have been a tampon user for YEARS. While this has been around for ages, I know a lot of ladies who dread the idea of sticking a tampon in. I get “I don’t know how”, “I’m afraid it’ll feel uncomfortable or painful”, all the freaking time. And it’s funny because I’ve gone as far as standing right outside a friend’s cubicle walking her through the process of application. My yoga cueing skills totally came in handy and were even put to the test. 😀
Now, when the team behind Ladouce Tampons hollered at me to give their products a try, I went for it. I’ve tried a number of tampon brands and they would always be a hit or miss. Some brands make it such a chore to put it on because of a poorly designed applicator, while others are simply uncomfortable due to its size (I get the regular ones and they still seem way too big).
What I love about Ladouce:
- NO APPLICATOR = LESS WASTE. This scared me a bit at first because that means having to hold what could be a flimsy tampon and put it in. In my head, that spelled BLOODY MESS in bold letters. To my surprise, it was super compact that it didn’t need an applicator and it was so easy to apply. I love how the brand is helping lessen the waste from female sanitary products. Although my ultimate goal is to go zero-waste, I’m just not ready for a moon cup or reusable pads. This is why going zero applicator goes a long way for me especially because the only brand that works for me uses PLASTIC applicators.
- IT FITS LIKE A GLOVE. I think the other reason it’s so easy to apply is its size. Apart from being so compact when dry and just expanding once inside, the size of product works perfectly for my body. No annoying feeling- in fact, you won’t even feel it there.
- IT COMES IN THREE SIZES – I hate when my flow goes super light but not light enough to just wear panty liners. For that, Ladouce has Minis. I don’t end up wasting a regular-sized one every time.
The only CON:
Since the normal-sized one is slightly smaller than the usual tampon out in the market, it fills up faster than others too. My flow is never heavy and on my heaviest day, it lasted me less than 3 hours. At less than 4, I pushed it too far and already got a stain. Good thing I was just at home, testing it. How is that a con when you should really be changing your tampon at least every 3 hours? The max you should keep it in your body is 5 hours. Whether or not mine is full, I change it at 3-4 hours for hygienic purposes. But if you’re stuck in traffic or in a really important meeting, the 5th hour “grace period” can go a long way in helping keep things together without having to worry about a blood stain when you get off your seat. For this reason, you would have to purchase either both the Normal and Super sized ones. Now if your flow is stronger, (which is the case for many of the women I know), I suggest you monitor closely how long a Super will last you. Other than that, it’s all good.
If you haven’t given tampons a shot and you are physically active, I highly recommend giving it a try. Sanitary pads under bikini panties SHOW even when you’re wearing the darkest tights and leggings. I’ve taught over a thousand yoga classes, seen this way too many times-trust me, it doesn’t look good at all.
And don’t worry if you’re a noob at it, we all go through firsts. Here’s how you can easily glide your way towards real freedom during your moon days:
- WASH YOUR HANDS. I don’t need to explain this one, do I?
- PEEL OFF THE WRAPPER AND TUG ON THE STRING. The string is there so you can easily pull it out when it’s time to change or remove it. Give it a firm tug to make sure you won’t have any trouble once the tampon has been applied. If the string is firmly secured, there’s no reason for you to worry about pushing the tampon all the way in. Just make sure you leave the string out.
- MAKE SPACE. Girl, that thing ain’t going in when your legs are crossed. Make yourself comfortable. When I was starting out, I would put one foot on an elevated surface while standing. I found it easier to apply this way. Try it in the shower!
- It’ll be difficult, painful or uncomfortable and time-consuming to try to apply a tampon if you don’t. The same goes for taking it off.
Still not convinced? Let’s bust some of the most common myths about using a tampon.
- Once you start using a tampon, you are no longer a virgin. Technically, a tear in your hymen is what will cause you to lose your virginity (studied this in Biology back in high school). A tampon does not and cannot go that far. All it really does is absorb the blood flow before it actually exits your body so it’s less messy.
- It hurts. Once inserted properly, you will not feel a thing. That’s also what I love about Ladouce. Because the size fits my body well, I barely know it’s there.
When you have a tampon on, you can train hard, practice yoga, even swim, without worrying about your period. It doesn’t cut off your flow either! That’s real freedom.
