First, there were smoothies, then there were cold-pressed juices, smoothie bowls and a whole lot of others in between. I LOVE all of these but one I’m currently crazy about is the tarty vinegar beverage I now use to replace my morning coffee.
Very timely because I seriously needed to cut down on the caffeine. I was crashing more often than usual because of it and I needed to balance out the PH levels in my stomach. Just like your typical lemon water, vinegar beverages do just that. However, it also helps curb appetite, helping you manage your weight naturally and gives your immune system a much needed boost.
The problem is, diluted vinegar doesn’t sound much like a party to most people. Which is why this old practice has been pushed to the back-burner to make way for tastier or at least more tolerable options.
And so today, that same detoxifying beverage is starting to get a face lift. With the addition of fermented fruits to make it more palatable, anyone can now enjoy what I like to call my morning cocktail. The addition of fermented fruits has also made this drink an excellent source of probiotics which is good for digestion and helps keep the gut healthy.
The wellness market is jumping in on the trend and foreign brands have started to make this accessible to more people just like Green Juices, Kombucha and Kefir. There aren’t much options locally yet BUT I found that bottles of Fruit Vinegar are sold at Korean grocery stores. They come in different fruit flavors such as Apple or Grape. Just mix one part vinegar with 3 parts water to start with, adjusting the ratio depending on how much vinegar you can handle.
If you can’t find them anywhere, you can still make yours. You’ll need:
- Apple Cider or Coconut Vinegar
- Water
- Fruits such as apples or berries to flavor your beverage. Best to stick to slightly sweeter ones to balance out the flavor.
- Sweetener such as Agave Nectar (optional)
To Make:
- Add 2-3 Tbsps vinegar (you can add more as you go) to roughly about 12 oz. of water. Place them in a jar with a lid.
- Add in the fruits, a little sweetener to taste, and place lid. Store at room temperature and allow to ferment for about 2-3 days after which, you can chill your bev in the fridge.
- Drink up in the morning and/or at night before getting in bed.
Go forth, and drink your vinegar! x
